Artificial Grass Installation in Essex
Artificial grass is a practical solution for Essex gardens that struggle with mud, shade, heavy use, poor drainage or the amount of time needed to maintain a natural lawn. A properly installed artificial lawn stays green all year round, does not require mowing, watering, feeding or reseeding, and can be designed for family gardens, dog-friendly lawns, children’s play areas and high-footfall commercial spaces.
Through Essex Artificial Grass, customers benefit from a specialist installation team with more than 15 years’ industry experience, carefully selected artificial grass products and installation methods developed specifically to produce a long-lasting, natural-looking finish.
Supplied and Installed by Artificial Grass Specialists
This is not a basic roll-out turf service. The installation includes site assessment, excavation where required, edge preparation, a compacted load-bearing sub-base, final levelling, precision fitting, joins, fixing and a power-brushed finish.

How Artificial Grass Is Professionally Installed
The long-term performance of artificial grass depends heavily on the groundwork. Poor installations often fail because the installer spreads sand directly over soil, creating dips, sinking and drainage problems later. The sister company’s method uses a structured sub-base and finishing process.
-
1Site assessment and ground preparation. The existing surface is assessed first. Where an existing lawn is being replaced, the turf and soil are typically excavated to around 100mm to create room for a stable base.
-
2Edge installation. A fixed perimeter edge is required to secure the lawn cleanly. Options may include EverEdge, sandstone setts, railway sleepers or a concrete fixing strip where an existing edge is already in place.
-
3Load-bearing sub-base. A minimum 50–75mm layer of MOT Type 1 aggregate is installed and compacted. This is the important structural layer that helps prevent sinking and uneven surfaces over time.
-
4Final levelling layer. Around 20mm of granite dust is spread over the compacted base to create a smooth, permeable surface for the artificial grass to sit on.
-
5Grass laying, fixing and power brushing. The chosen artificial grass is rolled out, cut precisely to the perimeter, joined where needed, fixed securely and mechanically power brushed to lift the fibres and complete the finish.

Benefits of Artificial Grass for Essex Homes
For many homeowners, artificial grass is not just about appearance. It removes the cycle of mowing, watering, feeding, reseeding, mud control and seasonal lawn repair.
- Green, tidy lawn appearance throughout the year
- No mowing, watering, fertilising or reseeding
- No muddy patches during wet Essex winters
- Good option for shaded gardens where turf struggles
- Pet-friendly and easy to clean with regular rinsing
- Useful for children’s play areas with optional shock pad
- Reduces the need for weed killers and lawn chemicals
- Can improve drainage when installed with the correct base
- Quality of installation matters as much as the grass itself
- Access, edging and ground conditions affect the quote
- Pet households may need more frequent rinsing and cleaning
- Shock pad underlay should be considered for play equipment
- Very cheap installations can lead to sinking or poor drainage
The key is choosing a product and installation specification that matches how the space will actually be used. A lightly used decorative front lawn has different needs from a back garden with dogs, children and play equipment.
Artificial Grass for Dogs, Families and Play Areas
Artificial grass is especially useful for households where natural turf is being damaged by constant use. Dogs often create worn routes, bare patches and muddy areas, while children need a safe and usable surface that does not become waterlogged after rain.
Pet-Friendly Lawns
The Supreme range is made from non-toxic polyethylene fibres and is suitable for dogs, cats and other domestic pets. The surface is easy to rinse, does not need weed killers or fertilisers, and helps reduce muddy paw prints indoors.
Children’s Play Areas
For gardens, nurseries and schools, artificial grass creates a softer, cleaner play surface that can be used in more weather conditions. Shock-absorbing underlay can be installed where extra fall protection is required around play equipment.
Easy Everyday Care
Solid waste should be removed promptly and the area rinsed with a hose. Periodic brushing helps keep the fibres upright, while leaves and debris can be cleared as part of normal garden maintenance.
Artificial Grass for Commercial Spaces, Schools and Nurseries
Artificial grass is not only for domestic gardens. It can also be specified for commercial premises where appearance, usability and low maintenance are important.
Schools & Nurseries
All-weather outdoor learning and play areas that reduce mud, improve year-round usability and can be paired with shock pad underlay.
Office & Workplace Areas
Low-maintenance green spaces for staff breakout areas, courtyards, roof terraces and customer-facing outdoor zones.
Hospitality & Leisure
Practical surfacing for pubs, restaurants, beer gardens, hotels, leisure venues and holiday lets that need to stay presentable.
Sports & Activity Spaces
Consistent, durable surfaces for practice areas, small sports spaces and activity zones where natural turf would wear quickly.
Commercial projects can be quoted after a site assessment, with the specification adapted to expected footfall, drainage, access and safety requirements.
Artificial Grass Installation Costs in Essex
Artificial grass installation costs depend on more than the square metre price of the grass. The final quotation should reflect the size of the area, access to the property, existing surface, excavation requirements, edging, sub-base depth, joins, underlay and finishing.
| Cost Factor | What Affects the Price? |
|---|---|
| Grass product | Supreme 35mm starts from £25.00 inc VAT per m², Supreme 40mm from £30.00 inc VAT per m² and Supreme 45mm from £35.00 inc VAT per m². |
| Ground preparation | Existing turf removal, excavation depth, waste removal and whether the current surface is soil, concrete, paving or a prepared base. |
| Edging | EverEdge, sandstone setts, sleepers, concrete fixing strips or existing fixed edges may be used depending on the perimeter. |
| Sub-base | MOT Type 1, granite dust, compaction requirements and drainage improvements where needed. |
| Special use | Play areas may need shock pad underlay. Pet lawns may need more emphasis on drainage and easy cleaning. Commercial spaces may need a heavier-use specification. |
